Research

Dr. Brooke Liu's research primarily examines how government organizations manage communication during crisis and non-crisis situations. She is affiliated with the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START, http://www.start.umd.edu/start).

In recent years, Dr. Liu has served as a public affairs volunteer for the American Red Cross for the Arlington, VA and Chicago, IL chapters as well as a research consultant for National Headquarters. As part of her work at START, she currently is leading a DHS-funded project that assesses the effects and effectiveness of counterterrorism interventions. She also continues to provide research support as an independent consultant primarily to government agencies, most recently focusing on evaluating social media campaigns.

Dr. Liu’s research has been published in Communication Theory, the Handbook of Crisis Communication, Journal of Applied Communication Research, Journal of Communication Management, Journal of Public Relations Research, Public Relations Review, and Natural Hazards Review.

Current research projects include 1) refining the social-mediated crisis communication model, which guides effective crisis management via new media, old media, and word-of-mouth communication and 2) evaluating the impact of counterterrorism measures.
