The Charles Richardson Award (named for the founding chair of the Department of Public Speaking at the University of Maryland-served from 1901 to 1940).
Presented to the most outstanding Ph.D. student in the department. Nomination for the award is made by the student's advisor and/or any member of the graduate faculty. Self nominations are welcome and encouraged, but students self-nominating should discuss the nomination with their advisor and secure the necessary letter of support. Nominees must submit a current CV and a teaching portfolio. A letter of support should be received from the student's advisor and/or another member of the graduate faculty. Any Ph.D. student in good standing in the department is eligible for the Richardson Award.

Any M.A. student in good standing in the department is eligible for the Ehrensberger Award.

Department of Communication Outstanding Teaching Awards
Outstanding Teaching Awards are given to no more than five graduate students who are in good standing in the department. Recipients may be either Ph.D. or M.A. students. Nominations for the Outstanding Teaching Awards may be made by the nominee's advisor, course supervisor, or any member of the faculty, and/or current or former students of the nominee. Self nominations are welcome and encouraged, but students self-nominating should discuss the nomination with their advisor, or their course supervisor, who will provide a letter of support. Nominations should be accompanied by a letter of support providing the reasons the student should receive the award. Nominees must submit a current CV and a teaching portfolio.

Department of Communication Outstanding Research Paper Award
The Outstanding Research Paper Award is given to the best nominated essay. Papers nominated for this award should have been written in the calendar year preceding the granting of the award. Papers may be nominated by any faculty member or self-nominated by graduate students. Any Ph.D. or M.A. student in good standing in the department is eligible for this award. The recipient of this award shall receive a certificate and the Department's student membership in the National Communication Association.

Department of Communication Outstanding Service Awards
Outstanding Service Awards are given to no more than three graduate students who are in good standing in the department and who have made substantial contribution to the welfare of the department or its graduate program through their service activities. Recipients may be either Ph.D. or M.A. students. Nominations for the Outstanding Service Awards may be made by the nominee's advisor, or any member of the department. Self nominations are welcome and encouraged, but students self-nominating should discuss the nomination with their advisor or other member of the faculty who will provide a letter of support. Nominations should be accompanied by a nominating letter outlining the student’s contributions to the department and/or graduate program. Nominees must submit a current CV.

All award nominations must be submitted to the Faculty Advisory Committee by April 15. The FAC will select the recipients of the graduate student awards.
