Michael Phillips

Michael is interested rhetorical theory and criticism, particularly at the intersection of rhetoric and philosophy. His dissertation is a construction of a rhetorical theory of humor, evidenced by the strategic use of humor by American political figures. He as taught courses in public speaking, argumentation and debate, argumentation and public policy, and rhetoric criticism. CV (pdf).

Brecken Chinn Swartz

Brecken's research focuses on cross-cultural and intercultural issues in broadcast media production, with a primary emphasis on the role of the media producer in civil society. She has lived and worked in both China and Japan, and as such concentrates on East/West perspectives in public communication. Her teaching interests include intercultural communication, gender and cultural identity, mass media theory, media production, media literacy and ethics, persuasion and attitude change, communication theory, and research methods.
