Comm Department Recognized For General Education Assessment Efforts

Department receives assessment award.

February 16, 2017 (College Park, MD) – Two professional track faculty members, Dr. Rowena Briones Winkler and Ms. Julie Gowin, were recently recognized by UMD’s Office of Undergraduate Studies for their efforts in assessing UMD COMM courses (COMM107; COMM386) that fall within the General Education program requirements.

The Office of Undergraduate Studies at UMD is committed to enhancing the value of General Education, the largest program on campus comprising about one third of undergraduate students’ work. Course coordinators such as Dr. Winkler and Ms. Gowin are asked to identify and report on how courses meet specific learning outcomes that help lead to future strategies for improving learning and enhancing the rigor of coursework. Dr. Winkler and Ms. Gowin’s engagement in General Education assessment will be highlighted by the Office in the upcoming accreditation visit by Middle States assessors.
