Department Chair's Message

Edward L. Fink

The 2003 academic year has brought with it exciting news for the students, staff and faculty of our department. Many instructors, graduate students and alumni have recently been honored for their dedication to the discipline of communication.

Professor Mari Boor Tonn was awarded an Eastern Communication Association (ECA) teaching fellowship, which is given to recognize outstanding communication educators, as well as Donald H. Ecroyd & Caroline Drummond-Ecroyd Teaching Excellence Award. Professors Shawn J. Parry-Giles and Trevor Parry-Giles received the Everett Lee Hunt Award. This award is given for outstanding contribution to the study of rhetoric. Ph.D. alumnus James Kimble was given the National Communication Association's Gerald R. Miller Outstanding Dissertation Award. Graduate student Yunna Rhee received the Walter Lindenmann Scholarship from the Institute of Public Relations for the development of new research in public relations. Our department is full of extremely talented individuals from the many areas of communication.

Our 14th Annual Colloquium Series brings scholars to our campus to promote intellectual discussion with students and faculty. Several scholars have already shared their discoveries in the field of communication. We were privileged to host Dr. James Andrews of Indiana University, who gave our first colloquium talk on "History, Race, and Presidential Rhetoric: Woodrow Wilson and the Ceremonial Discourse of National Unity."

Dr. John Oetzel, from the University of New Mexico, spoke on intercultural conflict.  "Addressing Value-Expressive Attitudes and Arousing Emotion as Means for Motivating Young Adults to Seek STD Testing" was given by Dr. Craig Hullet of University of Wisconisin-Madison, and "The Book Id Write Today: A Critique of Organizational Public Relations" was presented by Dr. Christopher Spicer of Towson University.

These speakers create the degree of excellence in our Colloquium Series by offering a diversity of perspectives, continuing the opportunity for dialogue between invited scholars, communication graduate students and faculty about current, original research. The high quality tradition of our series is sure to continue next semester with many more talented minds from the communication field.

Our department is also involved in many outstanding events. We hosted our first annual Family Weekend activity on October 4, bringing students families closer to the communication staff and faculty. A Center for Risk Communication Research is forming. The center is aimed at educating students and the general public about methods for communicating about risks.

The first participants from University of Maryland to compete in the Bateman Competition, an opportunity for students to plan a real public relations program, received Honorable Mention. Several of our communication graduates are creating waves in the field by setting and reaching high goals. We are also celebrating the communication alumnae who have decided to return to our department as instructors.

All of these items are featured in this edition of COMMLink. I am certainly pleased with the long list of recent accomplishments by the communication department. Our students, faculty, staff and alumni have come together to create a strong successful family.
