Department Chair's Message

Edward L. Fink

Dear Alumni and Friends,

The 2003-2004 academic school year was certainly an eventful one in the Department of Communication! Our success and growth is evidenced by the accomplishments of our faculty and students, many of which are recognized in this newsletter. Our department’s influence on the field of communication extends beyond our many contributions to communication conferences and academic journals. Our faculty members are committed to the discipline as well as to serving society, which is demonstrated through our department’s theoretical and applied relationships.

Through the 2004 Colloquium Series, the Department of Communication continued its commitment to high-quality scholarship, intellectual exchange of ideas, and communication between University of Maryland scholars and the entire communication community. We invite scholars to share their latest research with our students and faculty. Click here for a list of this semester’s colloquia.

Family Weekend 2004

The Department of Communication is pleased to announce its participation in Family Weekend 2004. As part of family weekend, the department invites family members of prospective and current Communication students to the Second Annual Pre-Breakfast Coffee.

The pre-brunch coffee will be held in the Prince George’s Room, Stamp Student Union on Saturday, October 9 from 8:15-9:15. During this hour an information session will be lead by Dr. Fink, Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication, Dr. Waks, Director of Undergraduate Studies, and Julie Gowin, Outreach Coordinator/Director of the Internship Program. This session will be followed by a question and answer session.

Parents and students will have an opportunity to learn about several student groups such as the Undergraduate Communication Association, Lambda Pi Eta, and the Public Relations Student Society of America. Come enjoy light refreshments and learn more about the exciting academic opportunities the Department of Communication has to offer!
