The Makeover:  Out with the old, In with the new

Students and Faculty who returned back to the University this fall witnessed the second floor of the Skinner Building undergoing a fabulous makeover. “Out with the old and in with the new,” would be the perfect quote to describe the activity on the second floor. Chairs, new furniture, and paint cans lined the hallway of the second floor while workers were busily painting, and pulling up the old carpets in the offices and hallways. In fact, on the 8 th of October the entire east wing of the department was closed down to complete the renovation. Dr. Edward Fink stated that the changes are being made to make the department more presentable.

The makeover of the department doesn't stop on a physical level. In addition to new carpets and chairs, the department also looks forward to the addition of new staff members in the areas of intercultural communication, persuasion and social sciences, and public relations. With the retirement of Dr. Larissa and Dr. James Grunig, the department has been conducting an exciting although extremely time-consuming search for a new faculty member to teach public relations. These searches are challenging because the department will not settle for anything less than exceptional. How could we when our department is recognized nationally for quality in staff, curriculum, and students? If none of the applicants meet the department's standards then no one will be hired. The department's goal is to hire two faculty members in the fall 2004 semester and fill the third position by the spring 2005. All of who will add to the prestige of the department.
