Department faculty members and graduate students were among over 300 scholars from around the country and the world to attend the Rhetoric Society of America's biennial Summer Institute, June 22-28, 2009, at The Pennsylvania State University. This was RSA's third biennial summer institute, and the 2009 conference was organized by David Kaufer, Carnegie-Mellon University, Jeremy Engels from PSU, and Department professor Shawn J. Parry-Giles.


Participating in the summer institute from UM were faculty members Kristy Maddux and Nneka Ifeoma Ofulue. Graduate student participants included Tim Barney, Terri Donofrio, Jim Gilmore, Ben Krueger, and Alyssa Samek. These participants were involved in workshops and seminars about rhetorical criticism, visual rhetoric, women & religious persuasion, rhetoric & nationalism, rhetoric & the sacred in the 21st century, and queering rhetorical studies.
UM graduate student Terri Donofrio was also the recipient of a $200 scholarship to support her attendance at the institute.
