Khamis Presents First Middle East Studies Lecture

KhamisAssistant professor Sahar Mohamed Khamis recently presented the first in a series of lectures offered by the Middle East Studies program at the University of Maryland.

Khamis provided an overview of modern Egyptian media, paying particular attention to the tensions confronting both producers and consumers of Egyptian media in a variety of forms. Linking the evolution of media to Egypt's social, economic, and political contexts, Khamis explored how various constituents in the Egyptian media landscape confront existing ideological and political quandaries.

Middle East StudiesKhamis joined the Department of Communication in 2007, coming to UM from Qatar University. She has a Ph.D. from the University of Manchester in the U.K. and has taught previously at Ain Shams University and the American University in Cairo. Khamis is currently working on a book that examines cyberspace and contemporary Islamic discourses and she recently authored an exploration of Al Jazeera English in New Media and the New Middle East, published by Palgrave in 2007 (Read more…).
