All-American women's basketball star Crystal Langhorne, a COMM major, has been named the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's basketball, and was also recognized as the ACC Player of the Year.
Langhorne's basketball honors are truly remarkable. A member of the 2006 NCAA Championship team, Langhorne holds numerous records at UM, including being the school's all-time leading scorer and rebounder. In rebounding, her record eclipses all men and women who have ever played basketball at UM. She is the first and only woman in Terps basketball history to score 2,000 points and the first to grab 1,000 rebounds.
Langhorne's accomplishments in the classroom are also remarkable. In a conference that includes athletes from Georgia Tech, Duke, North Carolina and elsewhere, Langhorne emerged as the top scholar-athlete for women's basketball, in part because of her outstanding academic record, including a 3.43 grade point average.
The Scholar-Athlete Award was established this past September to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sport. Candidates for the award must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 during the last two semesters. The honor was presented to Langhorne prior to the start of the Terps' ACC Tournament quarterfinal matchup against Boston College.
As noted on the Intercollegiate Athletics department Web site,
Langhorne has also excelled off of the court in her four years at Maryland. In addition to being a three-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll, she is the only player in the ACC to have made the All-ACC Academic Women's Basketball Team in each of the last three years. She has been named to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American Team in each of the last two years and to the Academic All-District Team in each of the last three.
