Belinda Stillion SouthardJennifer VardemanDepartment of Communication Ph.D. candidates Belinda Stillion Southard (left) and Jennifer Vardeman (right) have received two of the Ann G. Wylie Dissertation Fellowships awarded by the Graduate School at the University of Maryland.

Vardeman will use the award to fund her dissertation research for the Fall semester of 2008. Stillion Southard has accepted a tenure-track position at Indiana University/Purdue University, Fort Wayne, and will not be able to utilize the fellowship.

Each doctoral program at UM may submit two nominees. Nominees are evaluated according to four criteria:

1. The likelihood of the student's completing the dissertation during the 2008-2009 academic year.

2. The quality of the student's work.

3. The potential contribution of the dissertation to the student's field of research.

4. The student's other sources of support.

Only twelve students from the College of Arts & Humanities received Wylie Fellowships, and the department joined American Studies and English in receiving two fellowships.
