Honoring James & Larissa Grunig


Emeritus professors James Grunig & Larissa Grunig continue their remarkable contribution to the field of public relations and will be honored for those contributions.

Larissa GrunigLarissa Grunig is the author of a new book chapter. Her essay, entitled "Using Qualitative Research to Become the ‘Thinking Heart’ of Organizations," appears in Public Relations Metrics: Research & Evaluation, edited by Bette van Ruler, Ana Tkalac Vercic, and Dejan Vercic. The volume is published by Routledge. Professor Grunig was also the Magistral speaker at the II International Congress on Public Relations, held in Lima, Peru in June 2008 and was a featured speaker at the 14th International Public Relations Research Symposium in Bled, Slovenia, July 2008.

James GruningJames Grunig will be named a Doctor Honoris Causa during a visit to the University of Bucharest in Romania. The D.H.C. degree is a prestigious honor bestowed on very few individuals by European universities, and the University of Bucharest has only ever given the honor to two other communication scholars.

The Department of Communication is also pleased to sponsor the First Annual Grunig Lecture. The event will be held on October 30, 2008 at the Nyumburu Cultural Center on the University of Maryland campus. Held to also honor the 40th anniversary of the UM PRSSA Chapter, the event will include discussions of social media tactics and techniques and social networking and will culminate with the keynote speech by Richard Edelman, president and CEO of Edelman Public Relations.
