Department faculty and graduate students will present research, participate in programs, receive awards, and exercise leadership responsibilities at the 94th annual convention of the National Communication Association, November 21-24, 2008, in San Diego, California.
Over sixty panels/programs at the NCA convention will feature faculty members and graduate students from the UM Department of Communication. In addition to presenting research, Department faculty members will participate in NCA leadership and will receive awards. Professor Shawn J. Parry-Giles is a member of the NCA Research Board while Lecturer/Outreach Coordinator Julie Gowin is a member of the NCA Legislative Assembly.
Assistant professor Torsten Reimer will receive the NCA Golden Anniversary Monograph Award, one of the association's top honors, at the annual Awards Ceremony on Sunday, November 23, from 6:15 to 6:45 in the Manchester Ballroom.
Reimer and a group of his colleagues are receiving the Monograph Award for their article entitled "Effects of the Information Environment on Group Discussions and Decisions in the Hidden-Profile Paradigm," that was the lead essay in the March 2007 issue of Communication Monographs. The analysis tested the Information Sampling Model, exploring the different consequences for group discussion and decision-making as dependent upon the use of common versus unique information cues.
