Khamis Receives CRGE Award; Creates Classroom Global Connections for Students

KhamisAssistant professor Sahar Khamis is the recipient of a 2009 Faculty Seed Grant from the Qualitative Research Interest Group of the UM's Consortium on Race, Gender, & Ethnicity. The QRIG is a working group of faculty and graduate students who use qualitative methods in their work. Central to the work of this group is a focus on intersectional dimensions of difference and their relation to social justice and raising the profile of qualitative methodologies at the University of Maryland as a core component of a research design. The group is a joint project with the Maryland Population Research Center.

Khamis's award will support her research on New Meanings, New Identities: Egyptian Rural Women, Television and Social Change. The award carries a $4,500 stipend and sometime in the 2009-2010 academic year, Khamis will present her research to the CRGE.

In her COMM 468 course on Arab Media during the Fall 2008 semester, Khamis brought to the UM campus a program sponsored by Soliya that uses technology to bring students together from various countries. The Connect Program directly links students from universities throughout the Middle East, North Africa, the U.S., and Europe via Soliya’s customized online videoconferencing application as part of an accredited course. Khamis had previously used the Connect Program in her position as Head of the Mass Communication and Information Science Program at Qatar University.
