Several UM Department of Communication graduate students and faculty members will participate in regional communication conferences around the country during the Spring 2009.
At the Central States Communication Association convention in St. Louis, professor James F. Klumpp will participate in a panel devoted to Abraham Lincoln's rhetoric on the occasion of the bicentennial of the 16th president's birth.
The Southern States Communication Association convention in Norfolk, Virginia will feature presentations and participation on panels by two faculty members and one graduate student. Ph.D. student Abbe Depretis will present her paper entitled "I’m not a Feminist, but. . .: Women and Feminist (Non)Identification." Professor Robert Gaines will participate in a panel entitled "Global Rhetoric as a Field of Study," and associate professor Mari Boor Tonn is a panelist on a discussion entitled "Strange Bedfellows: Kenneth Burke and Popular Culture."

Three UM graduate students will present research at the annual convention of the Western States Communication Association in Phoenix. Ph.D. student Mara Hobler will present two papers, entitled "Making Meaning through Alternative Music: A Qualitative Study of Performance and Self-Expression" and "Picturing a Medal: The Construction of Disability in the International Paralympic Committee‘s Newsletter the Paralympian." Ph.D. student Tiffany Lewis will present a paper entitled "Politeness Strategies Used During Interpersonal Confrontation of Prejudiced Responses" and Ph.D. student Allyssa Samek will present a research paper entitled "Strategic Confession and Ironic Voice: Revisiting Rhetorical Resistance to the Military‘s Ban on Lesbians and Gay Men."
