Departmental News
Many members of the department will participate in panels, present research, and serve in leadership capacities at the 100th anniversary convention of the Eastern Communication Association, to be held April 22-26, 2009, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Graduate students participating at ECA include:
Tim Barney will present a paper entitled "'You Are, Therefore I Am': The World Social Forum and the Rhetorical Aesthetics of Social Change." Barney will also present research on the Top Papers in Rhetoric & Public Address panel. His paper is entitled "A Tale of Two Vaclavs: Rhetorical History and the Concept of 'Return' in Postcommunist Czech Leadership."
Rowena Briones is the co-author of a paper entitled "PSA Effectiveness: How the Partnership for a Drug-Free America's PSA Affect Individuals across Various Factors."
Terri Donofrio organized and will chair a panel on the World Social Forum. Her paper, to be presented on that panel, is entitled "The World Social Forum and Disciplinary Anxiety."
Elizabeth Gardner will present a paper entitled "The People's Shining Republic: Bryan, Progressives, and Imperialism," as well as a paper entitled "The World Social Forum: Challenging Definitions."
James Gilmore is featured on the top contributed papers panel of the Kenneth Burke Interest Group. His paper is entitled "A Conservative Reactionary: Pentadic Ratios and Ideological Perspective in Pat Robertson's The Ten Offenses."
Alyssa Samek will chair a panel called "Cracking the Glass Ceiling: Defining Moments for Women in Campaign 2008."
UM faculty members participating at ECA include:
Research professor Kathleen Kendall is a roundtable participant on a panel entitled "What We Learn by Being There: Defining Moments on the Campaign Trail." Kendall will also present a paper entitled "Who Made the Best Arguments?: Four Republican Speakers in the New Hampshire Primary."
Professor James F. Klumpp is participating in the Kenneth Burke Interest Group's Centennial Scholars panel. He will discuss Burke's book Attitudes toward History.
Assistant professor Kristy Maddux is the recipient of the Top Paper in Rhetoric & Public Address Interest Group for her essay entitled "Civic Faith: Amazing Grace and the Reconciliation of Religion and Politics." She will also be the respondent for the Top Student Papers panel in rhetoric and public address.
Assistant professor Nneka Ifeoma Ofulue was the program planner for the Rhetoric & Public Address Interest Group and will chair that group's Top Papers panel. Along with Trevor Parry-Giles, Ofulue will also discuss the history of rhetoric and public address in ECA as part of the Rhetoric & Public Address Interest Group's Centennial Scholars panel. And she will serve as respondent to a panel on "Religious Dimensions of Rhetoric and Public Address."
Associate professor Trevor Parry-Giles will present a paper entitled "Issues, Images, and Public Policy Deliberation in the 2008 Presidential Campaign." As editor-elect of Communication Quarterly, Parry-Giles will chair a panel examining the history of the journal that features all the former CQ editors. Parry-Giles will also present a paper entitled "TR's Last Triumph/Bryan's Last Stand: The 1908 Presidential Election."
Associate professor Mari Boor Tonn was the program planner for the Kenneth Burke Interest Group and is the respondent for the interest group's Top Paper panel. Tonn will also chair the group's Centennial Scholars panel and discuss Kenneth Burke's book Counter-Statement. And she will present a paper entitled "Pentadic Cartography, Pentadic Analysis, and Contemporary Criticism."
Professor Andrew Wolvin will be honored as a past president of ECA. Wolvin served as the association's president in 1977 and is the only UM faculty member to serve as president of ECA.
