| Shannon
A. Bowen (Ph.D., University of Maryland, 2000) is Assistant Professor
specializing in public relations. Her research interests include public
relations ethics and theory, organizational communication, internal
relations, and strategic issues management (she has studied issues
in the pharmaceutical industry extensively). Dr. Bowen taught at the
University of Houston and Auburn University before joining the faculty
of the University of Maryland. She teaches graduate and undergraduate
courses in public relations and communication management. Dr. Bowen's
research applies moral philosophy, particularly Kantian perspectives,
to the communication process.
Dr. Bowen has authored top faculty
papers and her research won the ICA Public Relations Division Outstanding
Dissertation Award. Her work applies sociological and mass communication
theory to communication involving terrorism. She has authored numerous
book chapters and her research is published in premier journals
such as: Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Public Relations
Research, Journal of Mass Media Ethics, Journal of Public Affairs,
and Public Relations Review. She was editorial advisor to the Sage
Encyclopedia of Public Relations, coauthor of the 9th edition of
the textbook Effective Public Relations, and is the principal investigator
on a grant sponsored by the International Association of Business
Communicators (IABC) Research Foundation to study communication
ethics. She studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill (BA) and the University of South Carolina (MA) before working
as a research analyst (Bowen, 2002, , 2003, , 2004, , 2005a, , 2005b).
