Nance McCown (M.J. in journalism, Temple University, 1994; B.A. in English, Messiah College, 1985) is a Ph.D. student at the University of Maryland (College Park). Studying public relations from a qualitative perspective, Nance's research interests include internal public relations/employee communications and the influence of organizational leadership on public relations, relationship building, public relations education, and media effects on public relations perceptions.
Nance taught four sections of Public Relations Techniques at the University of Maryland during the 2003-2004 academic year. In addition, Nance has been teaching selected public relations courses for nine years at Messiah College, just south of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Instrumental in beginning the public relations emphasis in Messiah's Department of Communication, Nance developed and taught courses including Principles of Public Relations, Business & Organizational Communication, Media Relations/Crisis Communication, Writing for Public Relations, and The PR Campaign. For five years, the PR Campaign course, involving a select group of senior communication majors with a PR emphasis, has coupled student service and learning through work for local non-profit clients. Students have developed a comprehensive media relations program (including research, action planning/objectives, communication/implementation and evaluation) for the statewide, Harrisburg-based Pennsylvania Association of Non-Profit Organizations; researched and developed a public relations campaign targeted toward prospective/current students, alumni, and the surrounding community for Messiah College Department of Communication's Lost Films Society; researched and implemented a comprehensive media relations program and donor/recipient relations program for Channels Food Rescue; researched and designed an international media relations/crisis communication program and media audit for CURE International; and developed and began implementing a research-based awareness and fundraising campaign for CURE International's new clubfoot initiative.
