Communication and PR-Journalism alums returned to UMD on October 3 to mentor COMM students on careers in Health Communication. They shared their diverse work experiences based on careers in government, PR firms, professional associations, and research organizations where they work on communication projects associated with mental health issues, gastroenterology, communication disorders, tuberculosis, blood disorders, AIDs, and a number of other public health issues.

Nan Receives Derryberry Award from APHA

Congratulations to Professor Xiaoli Nan for being named the recipient of this year's J. Mayhew Derryberry Award from the Public Health Education and Promotion Section of the American Public Health Association! This award honors outstanding contributions to health education research theory and recognizes outstanding behavioral scientists. It was named in honor of Dr. Derryberry who, as a member of the U.S. Public Health Service, established the Division of Health education in the Public Health Service.

The Mark and Heather Rosenker Center for Political Communication & Civic Leadership was proud to host the inaugural Rosenker Lecture, featuring Brad Blakeman and David Goodfriend. Entitled "So a Liberal and a Conservative Walked Into a Bar: No Joke. How to Disagree and Stay Friends in America Today," the lecture offered an update on the pending mid-term elections and discussed strategies and attitudes to working across the polarized political divide.

UPDATE: Congratulations to Ph.D. student Rhys Lym for 3rd place in the Three Minute Thesis Competition at the AEJMC awards! His winning essay is titled: "What Do You Mean Sorry?: The Impact of Culture on Crisis Responses."

Faculty members and graduate students from the Department of Communication will participate in meetings and present research at the annual conference of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). The meeting will take place in Washington, DC, from August 6-9.
