Nora Lee Heist

Professional Interests: 

Nora is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Communication with a focus on Rhetoric and Political Culture. Prior to her time at Maryland, she completed her two year commitment as a corps member with Teach For America in Memphis as a fifth grade teacher.  She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Communication from DePauw University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude.  Her research interests revolve around a rhetorical understanding of empathy in dialogic and deliberative spaces.  She has been an instructor for COMM 230 - Argumentation and Debate and COMM 107 - Oral Communication: Principles and Practice.  She has also worked as a TA for COMM 401 - Interpreting Strategic Discourse.  She is currently teaching a special service learning section of COMM 107 in partnership with the Do Good Institute.
