Professional Interests:
Ari Perez Montes, a Ronald E. McNair Fellow, is a graduate student in the Department of Communication at the University of Maryland. They earned their Bachelor’s degree from California State University, Monterey Bay with concentrations in Communication Studies and Ethnic & Gender Studies and a minor in Psychology.

In their research they try to emphasize and center the importance of community engagement and how their identities (un/privileged) grant me access to the communities they work with, but also help them be reflexive in how they navigate certain spaces. Broadly their research interests are exploring the formations of queer and trans* identities and spaces. More specifically they are researching Microaggressions within the LGBTQ+ Community focusing on gender and sexual orientation. They have taken a mix method approach to this research from literature review to an autoethnography and more recently to an experimental survey. While this is their main focus, broadly, Ari is interested in race, racial identity, gender, sexual orientation, interpersonal communication, and social activism. Ari currently, teaches COMM 107.
